About WiM-Africa

Women in Mining Africa (WiM-Africa) is a Pan-African nonprofit organization advancing gender equity, safety, and economic empowerment across the mineral and mining value chain in Africa. Operating in over 36 African countries, WiM-Africa works at the intersection of policy, communities, and markets to promote responsible mining, women-led value addition, and leadership development.

Our work spans mining safety and accountability, child protection and advocacy, ESG and climate resilience, applied research, and the development of institutional platforms such as the WiM-Africa Institute for Leadership, Sustainable Mining & Value Addition, including mineral beneficiation and testing capacity.

WiM-Africa maintains legal registration in selected African jurisdictions to facilitate country-level implementation and institutional collaboration.  WiM-Africa is also registered in the United States as a 501(c)(3) public charity and in the United Kingdom, enabling international partnerships and compliant institutional engagement while maintaining its operational focus across Africa.

WiM-Africa is building systems that place women and communities at the center of Africa’s mineral future through continental coordination, data-driven advocacy, and scalable programs.

A Platform for Delivery. A System for Change. A Coalition of Women.

Women in Mining Africa (WiM-Africa) operates through a dual institutional model—as both a pan-African membership-based association of women in mining and a continental programmatic delivery platform for gender-responsive mining, ESG, and economic empowerment initiatives.

As an association, we convene, represent, and organize women across the mining value chain—building coalitions, strengthening leadership, and amplifying women’s voices in policy, industry, and community decision-making.

As a programmatic institution, we design, fundraise for, and implement multi-country programs, research initiatives, policy interventions, enterprise development platforms, and institutional partnerships that translate advocacy into measurable, long-term impact.

This dual structure enables WiM-Africa to move beyond representation alone—towards delivery, systems reform, and transformation at scale.

Strategic Direction

WiM-Africa’s work is guided by three Strategic Focus Areas that shape both our association role and our programmatic delivery:

1. Coalition & Capacity Building for Women in Mining
2. Advocacy for Women in Mining and Mining Host Communities
3. Economic Empowerment & Sustainable Development

These focus areas define why we exist and where we intervene—ensuring that all membership activities, programs, and partnerships contribute to long-term systems change rather than short-term outputs.

Programmatic Delivery Framework

All WiM-Africa initiatives are implemented through our Seven-Point Program Agenda (7PPA), which provides a unified logic for program design and execution across countries:

1. Women-Led Mineral Value Addition & Market Linkages
2. Women-Only Mining Zones & Cooperative Development
3. ESG & Climate Resilience for Women in Mining
4. Legal Support & Policy Advocacy
5. WiM-Africa Research & Data Hub
6. NextGen Women in Mining Initiative
7. Digital & Media Influence in Mining Advocacy

This framework ensures that WiM-Africa’s work spans the full value chain—from grassroots empowerment and leadership development to policy reform, market access, and institutional transformation.

Institutional Architecture

WiM-Africa is structured around five Directorates, each with specialized Bureaus responsible for strategy, research, program delivery, policy, partnerships, communications, and operations.

This architecture allows us to function simultaneously as:

• A multi-country program delivery institution

• A research and data hub

• A partnership and implementation engine

• A membership-based continental coalition
• A policy and advocacy platform

Each Directorate translates strategic priorities into action—ensuring coherence between governance, funding, implementation, and impact.

Continental Delivery System

WiM-Africa delivers its work through a multi-layered system designed for scale:

• A continental institutional platform
• Country-level and community-based chapters
• Thematic and sector-specific hubs
• Implementing partners and civil society networks
• Academic, industry, and policy collaborators

This layered model allows WiM-Africa to remain locally grounded while maintaining continental coherence and international credibility.

Governance & Accountability

WiM-Africa operates within a clearly defined governance framework overseen by the Office of the Executive Director & Governance and supported by a continental Advisory Board.

This governance model ensures:

• Strategic integrity
• Ethical leadership
• Transparency and accountability
• Institutional continuity
• Responsible stewardship of resources
