In 2025, Women in Mining Africa (WiM-Africa) strengthened its continental footprint and institutional capacity, operating across 36 African countries with 1,534 registered volunteers and 213 implementing partner organisations. During the year, 762 volunteers participated in structured trainings, while 3,620 individuals were directly engaged through programs, advocacy, capacity-building activities, and community initiatives.
WiM-Africa convened and participated in 29 continental and regional meetings, advancing dialogue on gender equity, ESG, safety, leadership, and value addition in Africa’s mining sector.
As we move into 2026, we encourage all chapters, volunteers, and partners to deepen impact, align activities with the Strategic Focus Areas and Seven-Point Program Agenda, and consistently use the WiM-Africa guides and reporting tools to document results, strengthen accountability, and showcase collective progress across the continent.
What Will Be Built in Year One
Year 1 (2025/26) – Foundation & Chapter Development
Without strong foundations, scale becomes fragile.
Year One ensures that WiM-Africa’s continental ambitions are matched by institutional maturity, governance clarity, delivery discipline, and long-term credibility.
This is the year where systems are built, standards are set, and the conditions for real impact are secured.
1. Institutional Strengthening & Governance Alignment
WiM-Africa will consolidate its continental governance model, aligning its Directorates, Bureaus, and chapters under a single operational logic. This ensures consistency in decision-making, accountability, reporting, and partnership management across all countries.
The Secretariat and Office of the Executive Director will serve as the central coordination engine—supporting chapters, managing partnerships, and integrating programs across regions.
2. Chapter Development & Activation
Year One prioritizes chapter readiness, not volume.
Chapters will be activated through a standardized continental framework that includes:
• Formal governance structures
• Appointment and training of leadership teams
• Alignment with WiM-Africa’s Strategic Focus Areas and 7PPAs
• Standard operating procedures and reporting protocols
• Implementation toolkits and training resources
Every chapter must be operationally competent, legally compliant, and programmatically aligned before scaling activities.
3. Strategic Partnerships & Continental Alliances
Year One will focus on formalizing strategic relationships with:
• Development Finance Institutions (DFIs)
• National and regional governments
• Mining regulators
• Universities and research institutions
• Private sector actors
• ESG and climate platforms
These partnerships provide legitimacy, co-financing pathways, technical support, and long-term sustainability.
4. Program Harmonization & Pilot Design
Rather than deploying fragmented projects, Year One harmonizes all WiM-Africa interventions into a coherent continental system.
This includes:
• Designing standardized pilot models
• Developing training curricula
• Creating MEL frameworks
• Building digital platforms
• Developing toolkits for chapters
These systems will be rolled out at scale in Years 2–5.
5. Learning Systems & Adaptive Governance
Year One establishes WiM-Africa’s learning and review systems, including:
• Annual strategic reviews
• Milestone-based implementation
• Real-time learning loops
• Evidence-based decision-making
This ensures that the Action Plan remains a living framework, not a static document.
Year 1 Institutional Anchor: The WiM-Africa Institute
Year One (2025/2026) marks the formal positioning of the WiM-Africa Institute for Leadership, Sustainable Mining & Value Addition as a core delivery mechanism of the Action Plan.
In this foundational year, the Institute will focus on systems-building —establishing its governance framework, curriculum architecture, research platforms, and the technical design of its multi-mineral beneficiation laboratory model.
The Institute will serve as the knowledge, training, and innovation backbone of the WiM-Africa ecosystem, supporting chapters with standardized curricula, certification pathways, research tools, and implementation frameworks.
The Institute serves as the physical and intellectual hub of WiM-Africa’s programs.
It will host:
• Professional certification programs
• Mineral beneficiation laboratories
• Leadership and executive training
• ESG and climate courses
• Youth fellowships and internships
• Research and innovation centers
• Enterprise incubation
The Institute anchors long-term skills development and knowledge production for Africa’s mining future.
